When we started writing One Great Year we had a brilliant concept, an outline and a character sketch but we needed a lot more information to turn the brief screenplay treatment into the epic novel it would become. What would our main character Marcus understand, thanks to his past life memory, that time has forgotten? We began searching for information that a 13,000 year old man would know that the rest us probably would not.
As we started to explore the ancient knowledge that was available, a number of anomalies started to emerge. It was much like the Sesame Street phrase we learned as children, “one of these things just doesn’t belong here”, except there wasn’t one inconsistency, there were many. The currently accepted belief in the development of human civilization in a linear evolutionary pattern, from cave dweller and constantly increasing in intellect, knowledge and civilization until present day, did not fit.
The evidence was everywhere! Books, articles, scientific papers, recent discoveries and all of them indicated a pre-history in which human civilization was highly advanced. There were theories that our world cycles, ascends and descends, through ages of great knowledge and brilliance and ignorance and darkness. We had to know more, and so the life altering adventure of researching One Great Year began!
Early in our writing, we were profoundly influenced by the discovery of the Antikythera Mechanism, which is regarded as the world’s oldest analog computer. It was found in an Aegean shipwreck in the early 1900’s. It is known that the shipwreck occurred in 80 BC, more than 2000 years ago, but they don’t know how old the mechanism was when the ship went down.
The historical inconsistency is this: the Antikythera Mechanism is made up of more than thirty gears though it was created 1,500 years before these types of gear mechanisms were thought to have been invented. It not only calculates the position of the Sun and moon, it monitors other astrological information, such as moon phases, eclipses, and the position of 5 planets. The mechanism is still being studied today, and its capabilities are yet to be fully understood. The Antikythera Mechanism far surpasses what was once thought possible for that time in history.
How is it possible? What else was possible thousands of years ago? Marcus would have known, so we continued to research relentlessly.
There are countless discoveries that point to an alternative, notably advanced, and misunderstood ancient beginning. To this day, the methods used to build the Great Pyramid of Giza are still unknown and cannot be equalled. The megalithic slabs and interlocking H-blocks of Puma Punku in Tiahuanaco, Bolivia are a mystery; the pyramids beneath the water off Cuba are in a location that would not have been without water for 40,000 years.
Another significant source indicating that our ancestors were far more advanced than they are given credit, are the Vedic texts. Veda means knowledge, and these ancient Sanskrit texts out of India are thought to have been recorded between 1400 BC – 200 BC. Most Indologists agree that the verses were passed along in the oral tradition for thousands of years before they were handed down in written form.
Incredibly, the Vedic texts contain the knowledge that the physical world is made up of atoms and that atoms have an internal structure resembling the solar system. Ancient Indian philosophy endeavors to explain the true nature of reality in a way that we exist in a consciousness-created reality and our perspective affects our experience. The Vedas assert that consciousness is the fundamental nature of the universe.
Modern science tells us that atoms are 99.99% free space. “Quantum Physics deals with that space as quanta with 5 main ideas 1). Energy is not continuous, but comes in small but discrete units. 2) The elementary particles behave both like particles and like waves. 3) The movement of these particles is inherently random. 4) It is physically impossible to know both the position and the momentum of a particle at the same time. The more precisely one is known, the less precise the measurement of the other is. 5) The atomic world is nothing like the world we live in.” (source: http://library.thinkequest.org/3487/qp.html)
The Vedas describe the quantum world that is being considered in modern scientific labs and theories. Reality as described in the Vedas has the potential to transform the basis of our individual and social actions. By realizing the essential identity of oneself is the same as other creatures, one acts from compassion and unity rather than conflict and separation. The most profound changes are not the changes to the world, but the changes in how we perceive them.
The ancient Vedic texts also describe clear cycles in the rise and fall of human consciousness and civilizations through ages or Yugas. This led us to the Great Year cycle, which became the backdrop for One Great Year. The cyclical model of human development explained how pyramids, Antikythera mechanisms, and in depth understandings on atomic structure could have been understood so long ago. This knowledge helped us answer what would a 13,000 year old man know that the rest of us do not? And we had only just begun…
